The salt chlorinator works based on the process of electrolysis. It contains an electrolytic cell. When the pool water, which has a certain concentration of salt (usually sodium chloride) dissolved in it, passes through the electrolytic cell, an electric current is applied. This causes a chemical reaction where the chloride ions in the salt are converted into chlorine gas. The chlorine gas then dissolves in the water, forming hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ions, which are the active forms of chlorine that help to sanitize and disinfect the water, killing bacteria, viruses and other harmful microorganisms.
